Scholarship Overview

The University of Southampton is inviting applications for a fully funded PhD scholarship focused on one of the most critical challenges in modern technology: The Sustainability of Artificial Intelligence.

As Generative AI (GenAI) models—such as Large Language Models (LLMs) and image generators—become central to applications ranging from video production to music generation, their environmental impact has skyrocketed. The computational demand for training and running these models consumes vast amounts of energy. This project aims to pioneer advancements in energy-efficient Generative AI, focusing on achieving faster inference times and reduced model sizes without compromising performance or increasing carbon emissions.

This is a unique opportunity to join a multidisciplinary cohort under the prestigious UKRI AI Centre for Doctoral Training on Sustainable AI (SustAI).

Research Project: The Challenge & Goal

The Problem: Current GenAI models are resource-heavy. They require massive data centers and high-end GPUs to function effectively. This limits their accessibility and creates a significant carbon footprint.

The Solution: This research project seeks to address these challenges by developing innovative techniques for efficiency. You will investigate:

  • Architectural Innovations: Designing new model structures that require less power.

  • Compression Strategies: Reducing the size of models so they can run on smaller devices.

  • Algorithmic Improvements: optimizing the math behind the models to speed up processing.

  • System-Level Optimizations: improving how hardware and software interact.

The Goal: The ultimate objective is to enable the deployment of state-of-the-art GenAI models across a broader range of computing environments—moving from energy-hungry high-end servers to efficient consumer-level machines (laptops, phones, edge devices).

Eligibility Criteria

1. Academic Qualifications

  • You must hold a 2:1 Honours degree (or its international equivalent).

  • English Language: EU and Overseas applicants must achieve an IELTS score of 6.5, with at least 6.0 in each competency.
