Job Overview

GSM Group of Companies is looking for a qualified and proactive Occupational Safety, Health & Environment (OSHE) Coordinator to join our GSM Beverages unit. This is a critical operational role based in Dar es Salaam, reporting directly to the Safety, Health, Environment, and Quality (SHEQ) Manager.

As the OSHE Coordinator, you will be the custodian of workplace safety and environmental compliance. You will play a pivotal role in ensuring that our beverage manufacturing operations adhere to the highest international standards, including ISO 45001, ISO 14001, and ISO 22000. Your primary mandate is to foster a “Zero Harm” culture, ensuring that every employee returns home safely every day while minimizing our environmental footprint.

Key Responsibilities

The role requires a hands-on approach to managing safety risks in a fast-paced manufacturing environment. Your specific duties will include:

1. Policy Development & Implementation

  • System Management: Develop, implement, and continuously review OSHE policies, procedures, and Safe Systems of Work (SSoW) to ensuring they align with current Tanzanian legislation and GSM Group standards.

  • ISO Standards: Support the implementation and maintenance of Integrated Management Systems (IMS), specifically ISO 45001 (Occupational Health & Safety), ISO 14001 (Environmental Management), and ISO 22000 (Food Safety). You will ensure that safety protocols directly support food hygiene and quality standards.

2. Risk Management & Compliance

  • Hazard Identification: Conduct regular workplace risk assessments and job safety analyses (JSA), particularly for high-risk activities such as working in confined spaces (mixing tanks), handling hazardous chemicals (CIP fluids), and working at heights.

  • Legal Compliance: Ensure full compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Authority (OSHA) and National Environment Management Council (NEMC) regulations. This includes managing statutory inspections (electrical, boiler, lifting equipment) and ensuring all operating licenses are up to date.

  • Audit & Inspection: Schedule and conduct internal safety audits and hygiene inspections to identify non-conformities and drive corrective actions.

3. Incident Management & Emergency Response

  • Investigation: Lead investigations into all incidents, near-misses, and property damage. You will use Root Cause Analysis (RCA) techniques to determine the underlying causes and ensure effective corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) are implemented to prevent recurrence.

  • Emergency Preparedness: Coordinate and execute emergency drills (fire, chemical spill, evacuation) to test the readiness of the response teams and update emergency procedures based on drill outcomes.

4. Training & Culture Building

  • Capacity Building: Plan and conduct comprehensive OSHE training for employees and contractors. This includes induction training, refresher courses, and specialized training on PPE usage and machinery safety.

  • Safety Promotion: Promote a positive safety culture through awareness campaigns, toolbox talks, and safety committee meetings. You will act as a safety champion, encouraging open reporting of hazards without fear of reprisal.

5. Environmental Sustainability

  • Waste Management: Monitor waste management processes, ensuring proper segregation, storage, and disposal of industrial waste in compliance with NEMC guidelines.

  • Pollution Control: Oversee pollution control measures and energy conservation activities to support the company’s sustainability goals.

Qualifications & Experience

To be considered for this role, candidates must meet the following strict criteria:

Education:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related technical field is mandatory.

  • Professional Certifications: Possession of internationally recognized certifications such as NEBOSH (IGC/Diploma), IOSH Managing Safely, or OSHA 30-hour is a distinct added advantage.

Experience:

  • 3–5 years of hands-on experience in OSHE coordination.

  • Priority will be given to candidates with experience in a manufacturing or FMCG (Fast-Moving Consumer Goods) environment, specifically within the beverage or food processing sectors.

Technical Skills:

  • Strong working knowledge of OSHE regulations in Tanzania (OSHA Act 2003, EMA 2004).

  • Demonstrable experience with ISO Management Systems (ISO 45001, 14001, 22000).

  • Proficiency in MS Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word) for reporting and data analysis.

  • Experience in conducting risk assessments and accident investigations.

Behavioral Competencies:

  • Problem Solving: Excellent analytical skills to identify hazards and propose practical solutions.

  • Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills to effectively train staff and report to management.

  • Leadership: The ability to drive a positive safety culture and influence behavioral change at all levels of the organization.

Why This Role Matters

In a beverage manufacturing plant, safety and quality are inseparable. An unsafe environment can lead to product contamination, putting both employees and consumers at risk. As the OSHE Coordinator, you are not just an inspector; you are a strategic partner in ensuring business continuity. Your work directly impacts the company’s reputation, operational efficiency, and legal standing.
