Program Overview

Theatre SPACEs is a groundbreaking Erasmus Mundus Joint Master programme—the first of its kind to focus specifically on theatre in social, participatory art, community, and educational contexts. This program is not just an academic degree; it is an extensive cultural journey designed for change-makers who want to use the performing arts to impact society.

Offered by a consortium of five prestigious European universities, the program allows students to study in at least three different countries over four semesters. You will gain theoretical knowledge and practical skills to work in diverse settings, from schools and community centers to non-conventional theatre spaces.

  • Trinity College Dublin – Ireland

  • University of Arts Târgu Mureș – Romania

  • Associated Partners: University of Hamburg (Germany) & Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (Czech Republic)

Scholarship Benefits & Financial Support

For the Pilot Class of 2026/2028, the European Union has provided exceptional support to make this program accessible to top talent worldwide.

  • Tuition Fee Waiver: There will be NO tuition fee for any student admitted to this pilot class. This applies to both EU and non-EU applicants.

  • Monthly Stipend: The most outstanding candidates will be awarded a high-value scholarship.

    • Amount: €1,400 per month.

    • Duration: 24 months.

    • Total Value: €33,600 (to cover travel, visa, and living expenses).

Note: While the tuition waiver applies to the entire class, the monthly stipend is competitive and awarded only to top-ranking applicants.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for admission and the scholarship, applicants must meet strict educational and language requirements.

1. Educational Background Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s degree (minimum 180 ECTS credits) in a relevant field. The program accepts graduates from the following ISCED 2013 classifications:

  • 01 Education (all areas)

  • 02 Arts and Humanities (all areas)

  • 0312 Political Sciences and Civics

  • 0313 Psychology

  • 0314 Sociology and Cultural Studies

  • 0321 Journalism and Reporting

  • 0915 Therapy and Rehabilitation

  • 0921 Care of Elderly and Disabled Adults

  • 0922 Childcare and Youth Services

  • 0923 Social Work and Counselling

2. Academic Performance

  • Grading Requirement: Applicants must have a minimum average grade of C (“Good”) in their previous degree to meet the academic requirement.

3. Language Proficiency

  • English: Proof of English proficiency according to HVL standards is required (typically IELTS, TOEFL, or PTE Academic).

Selection Process

The selection process is rigorous and conducted by a Joint Selection Committee (JSC).

Stage 1: Written Application (Score 0-20)

  • CV & Diploma (1-10 points): Assessment of previous education, professional experience, and competencies.

  • Motivation Statement (1-10 points): Assessment of your drive and alignment with the program goals.

  • Threshold: You must score a minimum of 15 points to proceed.

Stage 2: Oral Interview (Score 0-20) The top 30 candidates will be invited to an online interview to assess:

  • Motivation to work with theatre in diverse contexts (1-5 points).

  • Research interests (1-5 points).

  • Artistic interests (1-5 points).

  • Pedagogical/social/community interest (1-5 points).

Final Selection: Admission offers are based on the combined score. Holistic factors such as geographical balance, gender, and diversity are also considered (Erasmus+ rule: Max 10% of scholarships to candidates from the same nationality).

Required Application Documents

All documents must be uploaded in English or a Scandinavian language (or accompanied by a certified translation).

  2. University Degree Certificate (Bachelor’s Diploma with grading scale).

  3. Transcript of Records (Official list of courses/subjects).

  4. Proof of English Language Proficiency.

  5. Copy of Passport/ID (Including full name, photo, date of birth, gender).

  6. Curriculum Vitae (CV) – Must use the specific Europass/Project template.

  7. Signed Acknowledgements Form.

How to Apply (Step-by-Step)

All applications must be submitted through HVL’s official “Søknadsweb” portal. Follow these specific steps to ensure your application is registered correctly:

  1. Access the Portal: Go to the application section on the HVL website (link below) and click “Application form” to reach Søknadsweb.

  2. Register:

    • International applicants must choose “Login International Applicant”.

    • Click on “Register new international applicant”.

  3. Select Program:

    • Once logged in, select the admission group “Erasmus Mundus Joint Master”.

    • Select “Theatre SPACEs” from the list.

  4. Submit: Click the “Add” button, then “Submit application”.

  5. Upload Documents: After submitting, go to the “My documents” tab to upload all required files.

  6. Finalize: Click “Done” to complete the process.

Important Notes

  • Full-Time Commitment: You must enroll as a full-time student for 24 months. Distance learning is not possible.

  • Visa: Admission is conditional upon obtaining a study visa for Norway. If rejected, admission is revoked.

  • Health Insurance: Students from EU/EFTA must hold a valid European Health Insurance Card.

  • Student Agreement: Selected students must sign a legally binding Student Agreement accepting the study place.
