Scholarship Overview

Swinburne University is committed to providing educational opportunities to students from diverse backgrounds. The Swinburne Welcome Scholarships are designed specifically for holders of certain humanitarian and protection visas. These scholarships enable eligible students to access a variety of courses at Swinburne University, removing financial barriers to higher education.

If you are a holder of a Bridging Visa ‘E’, Temporary Protection Visa, or Safe Haven Enterprise Visa, this scholarship offers a pathway to transform your future through education.

Scholarship Benefits

This is a comprehensive scholarship package designed to support students financially throughout their studies.

• Tuition Fees: Full fee waiver for the duration of the course.

• Vocational Education Support: Students undertaking an approved Vocational Education program will have their materials fees paid for by the University. Where relevant, concession fees may also be covered for Certificate courses under the ASVET program.

• Stipend for TPV/SHEV Holders: Students on a Temporary Protection Visa (TPV) or a Safe Haven Enterprise Visa (SHEV) may be eligible for a payment of up to $7,500 per annum if their course duration is longer than 12 months.

Important Note on Income Support: Please be advised that enrolling in a course (full-time or part-time) may impact your eligibility for Government income support. Applicants must ensure they have an alternative source of income to support themselves throughout their studies—typically in the form of part-time work.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the Swinburne Welcome Scholarship, applicants must meet the following strict requirements:

1. Visa Status You must hold one of the following valid Australian visas:

• Bridging Visa ‘E’ (BVE) – Subclass V050

• Temporary Protection Visa (TPV) – Subclass V785

• Safe Haven Enterprise Visa (SHEV) – Subclass V790

• Temporary Humanitarian Concern Visa – Subclass V786

Note: Holders of Bridging Visa ‘A’ and those who entered Australia on a Student Visa are not eligible.

2. Enrollment Status

• Must be a commencing first-year full-time student in 2026.

• Part-time enrolment may be considered under special circumstances.

3. Eligible Courses

• Undergraduate degrees.

• UniLink Diploma programs.

• Select Vocational Education Diplomas and Advanced Diplomas.

• Exclusions: Swinburne Online courses, professional degree programs, and the Bachelor of Aviation are not eligible.

Required Application Documents

You must attach the following documents to your online scholarship application:

• Personal Statement (300 words): Detail your involvement in the community and how you intend to contribute to society in the future. You may include volunteer work or leadership roles in settings such as:

  • Schools or Youth Groups

  • Refugee Council of Australia member groups

  • Church or Sporting Clubs

  • Note: Engagement can be from your home country or your journey to/in Australia.

• Evidence of Financial Hardship: Provide proof such as:

  • Health Care Card

  • Youth Allowance, Newstart, Austudy, or Abstudy

  • Disability Support Pension or Carer’s Payment

  • Bank statements and payslips are accepted if accompanied by an explanation in your personal statement.

• Reference Letter: A written reference from the past 12 months supporting your personal statement.

  • Must include: Date, name, position, contact details of the referee, and your permission for the University to contact them.

  • This is not a character reference but a verification of your community involvement/leadership.

How to Apply

The application process involves two distinct stages. Both stages must be completed for your application to be considered.

Stage 1: Scholarship Application Complete the online scholarship application form and submit it with all the required supporting documentation listed above.

Stage 2: Course Application You must submit a valid application for a course at Swinburne University. The method depends on your current student status:

• Current Year 12 Students: If you have applied for a course through VTAC, you must include your VTAC ID in your scholarship personal statement.

• Non-Year 12 Applicants: Apply for your course of interest directly to the University.

  • You are encouraged to book a one-on-one appointment with the Admissions team for assistance.

  • Location: Admissions Office, Ground Floor, SPW Building (opposite Glenferrie Railway Station).

  • What to bring: Your Immi card and relevant documents.

Preference: Preference will be given to applicants who have already completed a Vocational Education program at Swinburne University.
