We are currently seeking to recruit a highly experienced and strategic Training Manager to join and grow our team. This is a senior leadership role responsible for the heartbeat of our operation: the skills and safety of our workforce.

Position Description

The Training Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing all training and competency programs within the mining operation. In this critical role, you will ensure that every employee and contractor possesses the required technical skills, certifications, and safety competencies to perform their duties effectively and in full compliance with strict industry regulations.

You will collaborate closely with operational leaders, safety teams, and HR to drive a strong safety culture, workforce capability, and continuous improvement in employee development. You will not just be managing training; you will be managing operational readiness.

Key Responsibilities and Strategic Deliverables

The role is comprehensive and covers four main functional areas:

1. Strategic Framework & Compliance

  • Framework Development: Develop, implement, and maintain robust training frameworks aligned with the mine’s operational needs and evolving regulatory requirements.

  • Regulatory Adherence: Ensure all training programs strictly meet legal requirements under mining, safety, and environmental regulations.

  • Audit Readiness: Prepare detailed documentation for audits, inspections, and regulatory reviews. You will serve as the primary point of contact for training-related compliance audits.

  • Records Management: Maintain accurate, audit-ready training records and competency matrices for all employees and contractors, ensuring real-time visibility of workforce capabilities.

2. Program Design & Delivery

  • Curriculum Design: Create competency-based training programs for complex mining operations, including heavy equipment operation, processing plants, maintenance, and support functions.

  • Onboarding: Design and deliver comprehensive onboarding, induction, and refresher training for all site personnel, contractors, and visitors to ensure they enter the site safely.

  • Delivery Modes: Facilitate a mix of classroom, on-the-job (OJT), and e-learning training sessions to cater to different learning styles and operational constraints.

3. Workforce Development & Analysis

  • Needs Analysis: Conduct regular training needs analyses (TNA) across departments to identify skill gaps and future capability requirements.

  • Succession Planning: Develop training plans that support employee development and succession planning, ensuring a pipeline of talent for critical roles.

  • Reporting: Provide regular reports and strategic recommendations to senior management on training outcomes, ROI, and workforce capability trends.

4. Leadership & Vendor Management

  • Team Leadership: Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of trainers, assessors, and training coordinators.

  • Scheduling: Work closely with mine managers, supervisors, and department heads to schedule and prioritize training without disrupting production targets.

  • External Providers: Coordinate external training providers, assess their performance, and ensure their delivery aligns with Barrick’s high standards.

Qualification Requirements

To be considered for this role, candidates must meet the following academic and professional criteria:

Education:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Training & Development, Education, Human Resources, or a related field is required. Equivalent significant industry experience may be considered.

  • Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (or a relevant national equivalent) is mandatory.

Technical Knowledge:

  • Strong knowledge of mining operations, safety regulations, and competency frameworks.

  • Experience delivering training to diverse workforces, ranging from frontline operators and technicians to senior contractors.

Experience and Skills Requirements

  • Experience: Minimum of 5+ years of training experience, preferably in mining, heavy industry, or similar high-risk environments. Experience in open-pit or underground mining environments is highly desirable.

  • Leadership: Proven previous leadership or management experience is essential.

  • Digital Proficiency: Experience with Learning Management Systems (LMS), HR systems, and digital training tools.

  • Systems Knowledge: Knowledge of ISO standards, risk management, and safety management systems.

  • Soft Skills: Excellent communication, presentation, coaching, and team-building skills.

  • Operational Mindset: Strong planning, coordination, and organizational abilities with the capacity to work under pressure in a dynamic operational environment.

  • Detail Oriented: High attention to detail with a relentless focus on compliance.
